A Springfield pipe fitter suffered third-degree burns yesterday at 3 p.m. Duane La Chance, 55, was listed in serious condition Wednesday night in the intensive care unit at Springfield Hospital. According to Henry Rosen, the project manager at Gross Engineers, La Chance was installing new pipes on the roof of the power plant when he accidentally touched a power line carrying 15,000 volts, with a piece of angle iron. The accident took place at Springfield Municipal Power Plant on 222 Power Drive.

Two Springfield men were involved in a car accident today at 11:45 a.m. James W. Cunning, 20, and Wayne Clay, 19, collided on U.S. 63, one-tenth of a mile north of Blue Ridge Road. According to a Lincoln County Sheriff's Department officer, Cunning was driving south on U.S. 63 in a 2005 Ford Focus when Clay apparently crossed the center line and struck the Cunning vehicle. Cunning is in satisfactory condition at Springfield Hospital.
